About the eye surgeon

Dr. Yuri Oleynikov,Dr. Yuri Oleynikov, MD, PhD is an ophthalmologist and a cornea specialist specializing in Laser Refractive (LASIK and PRK) Cornea and Cataract Lens Implant Surgery. He practices at Cornea Laser Vision Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and at Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA.

University, New York, home of the research labs where technology of laser refractive surgery and cataract phacoemulsification were originally developed. Dr.Oleynikov learned laser eye surgery under guidance of Dr.Stephen Trokel, one of founders of LASIK technology in the United States. Dr.Oleynikov continued his research work at Columbia University, and was honored with the first B.D.Srinivasan Research Award for his work on development of blood supply in embryonic eye.

Dr.Oleynikov was awarded a PhD in Molecualr Cell Biology at Albert Einstein for his discovery of a new gene and study of fundamental mechanisms of protein/RNA transport. This discovery in collaboration with other scientists at Einstein was being advanced to development of a new cancer screening test. Dr.Oleynikov has authored multiple journal articles and presented at national and international ophthalmology and molecular biology meetings.

Dr.Oleynikov continued his work at Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA where he performed new laser surgical procedures and conducted research on safety and predictability of laser eye surgery as an Associate Refractive Surgeon in the Laser Refractive Center at UCLA. Dr.Oleynikov focused on laser corneal procedures, corneal transplantation, complex cataract lens implant surgery as well as artificial cornea implantations performed by select few cornea specialists in the country.

At Cornea-Genetic Eye Institute Dr. Oleynikov joined Cedars-Sinai Keratoconus Research Program in 2007. For several years now he is actively involved in eye research in the field of genetics of keratoconus, an inheritable eye disease, its early diagnosis and treatment with INTACS and corneal crosslinking. Dr.Oleynikov is a Co-investigator on FDA monitored IDE study of keratoconus treatment with riboflavin-mediated corneal collagen crosslinking. His new research work includes development of laboratory-grown eye stem cells for ocular reconstruction .
